    The Reading Problem

More than 45% of Canadians aged 16 and older have difficulty:

"Contrary to popular belief, literacy problems do not affect only the less educated,

the poor or the marginalized." -- Government of Canada   www.literacy.ca

Reading difficulty and disability may be self-perpetuating, however, research

tells us that, with focused intervention for a relatively brief period of time

(approximately 60 hours), students with word level reading skills around

the 30th percentile, can raise their level of decoding skills, sight word vocabulary,

accuracy and fluency of text reading and comprehension (Torgesen, 2003).
